Peppermint Oil – A natural deterrent for Mice!

As many of you may know, there is a large plague of Mice causing havoc in South Australia and Victoria at the moment. Many residents are at wits end to find ways of getting rid of these unwanted pests.

The plague is so bad, they are eating everything in site. One farmer has had to resort to spaying his pigs with engine oil to stop the mice biting them. A lady I spoke to recently said “They are everywhere, even in my bedroom drawers and cupboards – not to mention the kitchen where our food is kept” A natural solution was needed, many people would rather not lay down poisons and traps, especially those who have children and animals. Peppermint Oil is the answer.

Spraying peppermint oil in certain areas is a very effective and natural way to deter pests. the scent of the oil will move them on as it is irritating to the mice’s sensitive noses. However peppermint essential oil can be very overpowering to humans too, it is a good idea to dilute the oil with something like Sunflower Oil or use a dripolator and use it sparingly.

In recent months we have sold 1000+ litres of Peppermint Essential Oil (Peppermint Arvensis) simply for the purpose of deterring mice. Many people I have spoken with have shared their suggestions, some of which I have entered below.

Deter Mice and Rats:

Place oil along the ground near exterior doors to stop mice entering the home.
A few drops on the window sill will not only freshen the air but it will stop pests coming in this way.
A drop or two on a cotton ball in draws and cupboards will deter mice, moths and silverfish.
Place some oil anywhere mice are active, this will ensure they move on.

Other Uses:

Place a few drops along skirting boards to stop male cats spraying the walls.
Can be used anywhere else a male cat sprays to deter this.
I have used it on my back door to stop my Jack Russell Terrier urinating on my laundry door.
A few drops on a piece of wood, left in the roof cavity of the home will deter rats and possums.

And I’m sure there are many more uses. If you have worked out an unusual usage – I’d love to hear your experiment.

PLEASE REMEMBER:
Peppermint Essential Oil is a very strongly scented oil. it should not be used in its pure form, dilution is best and it definitely should not be used near children or domestic pets. Pregnant and nursing mothers, and those with epilepsy should stay away from Peppermint Oil. We are explaining its use as a deterrent for pests and we definitely do not encourage direct usage on such pests in a cruel or inhumane manner. Please use common sense and contact an approved pest controller should your situation get out of hand.

While this site “ordermassageoil.com.au” will be live and current throughout the Christmas Season, we have decided to take a little break and relax a tad over the holiday season. Order and enquiries can still be sent though and will be dealt with, however they may take a little longer due to us not running normal office hours during this time.
